Om Sahana Vavatu Sahanau Bhunaktu Mantra: Lyrics & Meaning

What is the meaning of the Om Sahana Vavatu Sahanau Bhunaktu mantra?

Introduction

Om Sahana Vavatu is a Shanti (peace) mantra taken from the Yajurveda Taittiriya Upanishad.

This chant is commonly recited with devotion as a prayer before the start of classes in schools.

Peace mantras are supposed to calm the mind of the practitioner and the environment around him/her.

Daily chanting this type of mantra is considered to remove any obstacles before starting a project.

The mantra can be a potent force in creating something, but only if they come from that type of source where there is a total understanding of all that is sound.

Through the sweetness of devotional surrender, the mantra turns the negative into the positive.

Moreover, through daily repetition of the mantra, patterns of sound are inscribed onto the brain of the reciter. In addition, through repetition, the Shanti mantra washes over us, like the waves in the sea slowly get us wet.

The mantra dissolves us into unison, which is the essence of spiritual liberation. We “die” in a sense, as our ego fades into the Supreme Consciousness, as it gets unavoidably absorbed by the sacred sound.

When the mind is centered and calm, it can turn inward. Only a mind that is turned inward can truly experience the beauty and vastness of the Supreme Consciousness.

When our focus is outward on the objects of the senses, our mind is dispersed and racing behind one craving or another.

A Word About The Benefits Of Chanting Mantras

The word ”mantra” comes from the Sanskrit language and can be broken down into two parts:

  • “man,” that means mind;
  • “tra,” that means vehicle or transport.

Mantras are vibrated through mental practice, chanting aloud, or listening to them.

By combining rhythm, breath, and sound, mantra meditation channels the flow of energy (prana) through the body circuit, regulating brain-hemisphere imbalances and adjusting the chemical composition of your internal states.
