Introduction

A wise meditation teacher once said there should be no difference between meditating in the center of a city or in a cave because peace is inside us and is not dependent on outside circumstances.

Albeit this is undoubtedly true, it is definitely put to the test when your life is full of anger or chaos.

What is Devil’s Cauldron?

The Pailon Del Diablo is about 80 meters high and breathtaking waterfalls, located within a forest-type environment in Banos, Ecuador.

This waterfall is just 30 minutes away from the town and is considered to be one of the most popular attractions in the area.

Baños de Agua Santa, also known as the “Gateway to the Amazon,” is a small town nestled in the Andes, about 3 hours south of Quito in the province of Tungurahua, named after the active volcano (16,480 feet) of the same name.

How to reach Pailon del Diablo – Ecuador?

To reach this waterfall, you have four methods:

1.You can take a guided tour with a Baños–Puyo bus and stop off at the waterfalls.

2.You can take a taxi ($20). If you want to reach this waterfall faster or to do something specific along the route, like go to a zipline and come back, then paying extra for a direct taxi ride might suit you.

3.Take a chiva ($5). A chiva is like an open-air safari vehicle that will take you up and back on the route. This is the most straightforward and affordable way to see everything if you’re not comfortable biking.

4.The best way to get there would be to rent a bike ($6 for the day) in Banos and go all the way down the Ruta de las Cascadas to enjoy the nice views. This road, also known as the ”Ruta de Las Cascadas” attracts tourists from around the globe and is known to be one of the most beautiful in the country.

Ruta de las Cascadas (17 km/10.6 mi) is quite wet, and the “trail” turns into a crawl space at certain points, but the view is spectacular. Moreover, if you ride a bike from Baños, you will pass many astonishing waterfalls on your way.

Also, if you feel too tired to cycle back uphill, you can always take a bus back and stow your bike on top.

Reaching the waterfall

Once you get to the entrance, you will have to pay around $1 to enter.

There are drinks and snacks available as well. Furthermore, a suspension bridge offers an exciting view of the Pailon del Diablo waterfall a little bit away from the heavy mist rising from the waterfall.

Plus, it is free to view it from the suspension bridge.

You can also climb down the stairs and even stand under the waterfall.

The stairway is well-built, but the stone steps are always a little bit slippery from the mist the waterfall emits.

Make sure you have either an umbrella or a rain jacket with you if you plan to get up close to this waterfall.

Tips

• You can hear the roar of the 80 meters high fall waterfall from a long way off.
• The best time to visit the waterfall is just after the monsoons.
• Another piece of advice is to definitely bring waterproof clothing or an extra set of clothing because you will be able to step behind the waterfall and get close enough to touch it and get completely wet.
