What is the meaning of a red sun in the Bible?
Introduction
There is a lot we can learn from the Bible when it comes to looking at various changes in weather and astrology as signs of things to come.
We’ve spoken before on other topics concerning what the Bible has to say about them, such as birthmarks.
So we’ve decided to return to the Bible for this particular article and see if it has anything to say concerning red suns.
You might be interested to know that while the Bible doesn’t specifically talk about red suns, there are instances when it talks about the sun being eclipsed in total darkness and the moon being seen as a blood red moon, and instances of raining fire and brimstone and pillars of fire.
For this article, we will be looking specifically at those instances in terms of what the Bible has to say about red suns, so let’s get to it!
What does a Red Sun mean in the Bible?
The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah
In the early-mid chapters of the first book of the Bible, Genesis, there are accounts and records of two cities known as Sodom and Gomorrah that were known to be extremely evil and sinful cities full of wickedness in the eyes of God.
If you want to check out this full story, open up a Bible to the nineteenth chapter of Genesis, but we will just summarize it here.
So there was a guy named Lot, and he and his family were living in these cities, and God sent angels to pull them out of the city before the angels were to absolutely destroy the city because of their wickedness.
In the end, some stuff happened, Lot’s wife got turned into salt, and so only he and his two daughters got out alive, while God turned the sky and sun red by hailing down fire and brimstone to destroy these evil cities of absolute wickedness.
All of that to say that in this instance, a red sun was the sign of God’s wrath being used against evil.
Later it is used to demonstrate how God protected Moses from Pharaoh’s armies as he led the Israelites out of Egypt.
The pillar of fire is also said to have protected Moses from Pharaoh’s armies as he led the Israelites out of Egypt.
The Bible says that God sent a pillar of cloud by day to lead them and a pillar of fire by night so they could travel in safety.
This passage is used often to demonstrate how God protected Moses from Pharaoh’s armies as he led the Israelites out of Egypt.
Later it is used to demonstrate how God protected Moses from Pharaoh’s armies as he led the Israelites out of Egypt.
If you’ve ever seen the old animated movie The Prince of Egypt, they depict this pretty well.
As the Israelites are escaping from their slavery and captivity at the hands of the Egyptians, God protects them by creating a massive pillar of fire that acted as a wall between the Israelites and the Egyptians, allowing God’s people led by Moses, to safely evade the Pharoah and his armies.
An eclipsed sun and blood-red moon are signs that point toward the end of time in the Bible.
There are countless verses and sections of scripture throughout the Bible that speak on the end-time events that point toward Jesus’ second coming and everything else about the end of the world.
If you were to look up and read some of these sections and verses, you might find verses such as Isaiah 13:10, which says, “for the stars of the heavens and their constellations will not give their light; the sun will be dark at its rising” or Joel 2:31 “the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes.”
Countless other scriptures record these signs of blood moons and darkened suns as the coming of the Lord.
The accounts of the Bible regarding Jesus’s crucifixion even talk about how right after he had given up his spirit that the sky and sun darkened, and a mighty earthquake shook and split the ground. Interesting stuff.

Joel 2 says that Judgment Day is coming, and there will be signs in heaven and on earth before it arrives. One of those signs is a red sun.
Regarding Joel 2, in talking about this topic of a red sun which is better off being called a darkened or black sun, we can summarize that it holds several different meanings and warnings:
- A red sun is a sign of war
- A red sun is a sign of judgment
- A red sun is a sign of death
- A red sun is a sign of change
- A red sun is a sign of God’s anger against sin and evil
- A red sun is a sign of God’s protection for his people in evil times of judgment

Different people interpret what a red sun means differently, but all agree that it is an omen of change to come and should not be ignored.
Although the Bible doesn’t give a specific explanation of what this omen means, it does say that it is a sign from God and should not be ignored.
Some people believe that a red sun means war, and others believe it indicates judgment or death.
In other interpretations, the red sun symbolizes God’s anger with us for our sins or His protection over us and His desire to bring change in our lives.
The Bottom Line
As we said before, it should rather be called a darkened sun or a black sun because, in the events that we are talking about and all throughout the Bible, it never refers to a red sun but rather a darkened and eclipsed black sun.
Though there are several references toward a blood-red moon.
The Bible is full of signs and omens that foretell the future, and a red sun is just one of many.
