Spiritual meaning of forgetting dreams

What is the spiritual meaning of forgetting dreams?

Short answer – forgetting a dream can signify that our souls are trying to protect us from something that would otherwise cause us undue stress or anxiety if we were fully awake and aware when experiencing it.

Introduction

We all know that dreams hold a lot of spiritual significance, but what about if you forget your dreams?

Can the non-, or mis-, remembering of dreams also have a spiritual meaning, and, if so, what could it be?

Spiritual meaning of forgetting dreams

We get lots of messages through our dreams, sometimes it’s simply our brain trying to process what’s happened in the day, or sometimes it may be to do with certain stresses that we’re going through, but commonly it is thought that dreams contain messages from our spirit guides or Angels – cosmic downloads that are here to warn us or open our eyes up to what’s going on in our lives.

And the messages we receive should not be ignored, but what should we do if we forget?

Misremembering Dreams

Dreams are often misremembered because of the sleep state we are in when we experience them, and sometimes, the skewed nature of our memories can also offer insight into the meaning. For example, why are you remembering certain parts and not others?

Is it because they hold a certain significance for you, are they highlighting to you an area of your life in which you have been feeling disjointed or off-balance?

It’s important to note which parts of your dreams you remember because the messages that stick with you long enough into wakefulness are certain messages you need to hear. It’s really recommended to note down your dreams in the morning in order to work through certain messages or patterns that are coming through.

Due to the state of sleep we enter into when we begin to dream, we actually end up forgetting up to 95% of our dreams shortly after waking.

The reason for this is that the parts of our brain that function to process information and memory when we are awake, aren’t functioning in the same way as when we are asleep, so the memories aren’t stored.

It’s important to note here that not remembering your dreams is not something to be worried about and isn’t a sign of losing your memory or other such ailments.

Dreaming is actually something that happens once the brain is well-rested enough to start being somewhat active again, so not remembering your dreams could be a surefire sign that you’re not getting enough, or enough good quality, sleep.

If your brain was well-rested it would be more likely that you’d experience, and remember, your dreams more often.

There’s also a reason that it’s recommended to start writing down your dreams if you want to start remembering them more – those that place more significance on their dreams and their interpretations tend to remember them more.

So, if you find that you never remember your dreams but would like to, then start keeping a journal with them noted down.

Our Subconsciousnot remembering dreams spiritual meaning

Dreams access our subconscious minds and sometimes, for some people, the thought of doing this is terrifying.

As such, these people will tend to dream less and remember less about them.

There can be a distinct fear around delving into the subconscious mind for many people, who fear the uprising of trauma or grief, and who prefer to bottle up their emotional energy.

These people will find dreaming difficult as they will be extremely closed off and strict about their mindset.

For those who have experienced a lot of trauma, it is possible that they are dreaming while they sleep, but due to the nature of the content of the dream, their mind works to help them forget very quickly.

Sometimes, memories will become intertwined with the dream, and these memories can be very disturbing and difficult to manage, so the best way to deal with them is to forget.

Conversely, those who have a good relationship with their subconscious and perhaps partake in a lot of inner work will likely be much more open to receiving messages from within and less scared to uncover what might be hiding there.

Our authentic selvesmeaning of forgetting dreams

Alongside being open to connection with our subconscious minds, creating and nurturing an authentic relationship with yourself is another aspect that can influence how often you remember your dreams.

Being very closed off, guarded, and maybe even uncertain of who you truly are will lead you to forget who you truly are at your core.

When you forget who you are, your mind is unable to, or perhaps unwilling to, store information that has no bearing or relevance to you, which will mean that often your dreams are also not relevant to you or your path to your highest self.

When we are living out of alignment with our true selves, our minds can become confused – what do you truly love?

What do you enjoy doing?

What are your values and morals?

These might sound like obvious questions to many, but to some, these questions can confront them with the very real realization that they do not know themselves.

In childhood, we have a deep sense of connection to ourselves and the world around us, but as we grow up, we become distracted and busy with our responsibilities and trying to figure out how to create a life we love (which, in the process, usually means we end up living a life we don’t).

We forget who we are.

Not only this, but as children, we are much more imaginative – you may remember that your dreams as a child were more vivid and creative – sailing a ship on the high seas, climbing a mountain, or fighting off ‘baddies’ while protecting your castle!

Sometimes, as adults, we can lose this imagination, and our dreams can become nothing more than a (sometimes scary) reminder of the unsatisfying lives we live – meaning our brains aren’t inclined to remember them.

Reconnecting to yourself is one of the best things you can do for your life in general, but also for helping you to recall your dreams.

Remember, it’s not a bad sign if you can’t remember them at the moment, but if you want to start being able to connect with them more, then there are steps you can take, to recap:

  • Start recording your dreams in a dream journal – the more emphasis you put on dreams, the more likely you are to recall them
  • Ensure you are getting enough sleep
  • Work through any underlying trauma that your mind may be trying to keep shut out
  • Reconnect to your authentic self so that your dreams become more relevant
