Who was Enoch?

It is said that Enoch received favor from God and was given divine knowledge that others in His time were not given. However, similar can be said of any of the books of the Bible because of the belief that they were all written under God’s spiritual instruction.

Let’s take a look at what sets Enoch apart from the others.

There were four people with a similar name:

• the first mentioned in Genesis was Enoch, who was a son of Cain;
• the second was Enoch, son of Jared and the lineage of Seth;
• the third one was the son of Midian;
• the last was the eldest of Reuben.

Each of these men, named Enoch, was mentioned in Genesis.

That isn’t too surprising, considering how common it is in many cultures to name people after a previous patriarch or a notable figure in history.

An interesting note is that Seth is the son that God gave Adam to replace Abel (Gen 4:25).

While it may seem that all of these names might not make a difference to the events, upon further study, we find that Enoch was alive at the time leading up to the great flood but ascended before the flood.

He witnessed the downfall of man before he ascended and wrote his account.

Not only did Enoch share his knowledge of the sin and wrongdoing in the world, but he also shared the knowledge he gained in Heaven, including the truth of “the Son of Man,” who would be later known as Jesus.

After reading the Book of Enoch, it is easy to wonder why it isn’t included with the other canonically accepted books.

Genesis gives the lineage of Enoch, and other books like Jude and Hebrews were written with the assumption that the reader has previously read through the Book of Enoch.
